Transforming Online Training

Creating engaging online training can feel like searching for a unicorn. With attention spans dwindling and digital fatigue rampant, how do you deliver impactful learning experiences? Recently, Connective Canvas tackled this challenge by developing a dynamic online training course, leveraging the power of Training from the Back of the Room (TBR) and the versatility of Miro.

Engaging Minds, Virtually

TBR, a methodology rooted in brain-based learning, emphasises active participation and learner-centric design. Its core principles – connection, concepts, concrete practice, and conclusions – provided the foundation for the online course. In a virtual setting, TBR allows for flexibility and adaptability, transforming passive consumption into active engagement. We focused on creating interactive sessions that facilitated meaningful discussions and collaborative problem-solving, ensuring learners were actively involved in their own learning journey.

A Canvas for Collaboration

Instead of relying on multiple platforms, we chose Miro as our sole training environment. This decision was driven by Miro's intuitive interface, collaborative features, and visual capabilities. We created dedicated a Miro board for the course, and then sectioned it off for each module. A templatised set of interactive activities, visual aids for content delivery, and breakout frames for group discussions. The ability to seamlessly integrate multimedia elements and facilitate real-time collaboration made Miro the perfect canvas for our TBR-inspired course.

Building Learning Brick by Brick

Our development process began with a needs analysis and to determine what training materials had been used previously, followed by the structuring of content around the TBR principles. Learning objectives were clearly defined, and activities were designed to reinforce key concepts. Visual aids, such as the use of Miro's stickers and emoji's, were used to provide a friendly nature to the material. Interactive exercises, including check-ins and check-outs for each section, quizzes, puzzles and more, kept learners engaged and entertained whilst they learned. Collaborative activities, such as brainstorming sessions and group projects, fostered teamwork and knowledge sharing. Each module was carefully crafted to build upon the previous one, ensuring a cohesive and progressive learning experience.

Captivating Attention

To maintain learner attention, we incorporated storytelling and gamification elements. Short, engaging videos and interactive simulations were used to illustrate concepts and provide practical application. We ensured regular breaks and varied activities to prevent cognitive overload. By creating a visually appealing and interactive environment, we fostered a sense of community and encouraged active participation.

Empowering Future Delivery

A comprehensive handover process was crucial for ensuring the ongoing success of the training program. This included the creation of a detailed Train the Trainer video and comprehensive Speaker Notes.

The Train the Trainer video provided a step-by-step guide on facilitating the online course within Miro. It covered essential aspects such as navigating the Miro board, facilitating interactive activities, and troubleshooting common issues. We also included tips on fostering engagement, managing group dynamics, and adapting the course to different learner needs. This resource empowered the client to confidently deliver the training and maintain its effectiveness.

The Speaker Notes provided detailed guidance on the course content, activities, and key messages. They were structured to align with the Miro board, providing clear instructions and prompts for each activity. The notes also included background information, key takeaways, and potential questions to stimulate discussion. This resource ensured consistent delivery and allowed future trainers to adapt the training to their specific audience.

Positive Impact

The training and content received overwhelmingly positive feedback, highlighting the course’s engaging design and practical application. They noted a significant improvement in learner engagement and knowledge retention. The comprehensive handover resources enabled them to seamlessly integrate the training into their existing programs, resulting in increased efficiency and productivity. Comments such as "Best. Training. Ever." and "Most-engaging training I've ever attended" were common.
